Job Description

We are looking for a Cold Case Civilian Investigator to investigate unsolved criminal cases in partnership with sworn Indiana State Police (ISP) Detectives. This position is a part‑time contract role and is onsite , with assignments located throughout the state of Indiana.

What You’ll Do

  • Investigate cold case files to identify suspects and reconstruct case timelines and evidence
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of unsolved criminal cases
  • Review and analyze physical and forensic evidence, including DNA, digital evidence, firearms, fingerprints, and trace evidence
  • Assist sworn detectives with interviews of witnesses, victims, and suspects
  • Develop and manage investigative sources of information
  • Prepare and submit clear, concise, and thorough investigative reports in accordance with Department standards and procedures
  • Testify in court regarding investigative findings, attend pretrial conferences, and provide depositions as required
  • Promote a positive public image of the Department through professional conduct
  • Effectively manage personal stress in high‑pressure investigative environments

What You’ll Need

Required:

  • Minimum of 20 years of full‑time law enforcement experience
  • At least 5 years of full‑time investigative experience, or recommendation from the Cold Case Commander
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license
  • Working knowledge of Department Rules, Regulations, and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Strong understanding of state and federal laws, criminal case law, and court procedures
  • Demonstrated background conducting successful criminal investigations
  • Ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds and emotional states
  • Ability to interview and interrogate individuals with varying levels of emotional and mental stability
  • Strong report writing skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to organize workload, set priorities, and work independently
  • Ability to successfully pass a background investigation
  • Submission of a complete work history and required supporting documentation (resume, transcripts, certifications, DD214 if applicable)

Preferred:

  • Prior cold case investigative experience
  • Experience testifying in court proceedings related to complex investigations

Physical Demands

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA and other federal, state, and local standards
  • Sedentary work that involves sitting or remaining stationary most of the time with occasional need to move around the office or field locations
  • Ability to conduct repetitive tasks on a computer utilizing a mouse, keyboard, and monitor

$40 per hour

The pay range for this position is listed above. Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including location, experience, and education. Benefit packages include medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as 401k retirement account access. Employees in this role may also be entitled to paid sick leave and/or other paid time off as provided by applicable law.
